Iraqi Human Rights Committee urges action to alleviate prison overcrowding

The Human Rights Committee of the Iraqi Council of Representatives has called upon the Iraqi President to expedite the signing of execution orders for approximately 8,000 death row inmates, aiming to alleviate prison overcrowding.

Zuhair Fatlawi, a member of the human rights committee, told the official Iraqi news agency that overcrowding in most prisons has led to adverse effects on service provision and an increased risk of disease transmission among inmates.

He said that since 2014, approximately 8,000 individuals have been sentenced to death for terrorism-related offenses but have yet to be executed.

He urged the president to promptly sign their sentences rather than continuing to keep them in prison.

Fatlawi said that the committee has intensified its efforts to accelerate the approval of the amnesty bill, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that all individuals receive their rights.
