Metro Center is scheduled to release its 15th report on the situation of press freedom in the Kurdistan Region for 2025, entitled "Environment without accountability and injustice threatens press freedom", along with that it will publish its first report on the situation of freedom of expression in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region for 2025, entitled "Worrying Developments and Terrible Incidents”.
Both reports mirror the events of last year:
1. The report on the right to freedom of expression, prepared for the first time by the Alliance Network 19 that monitored hundreds of protests (demonstrations, strikes, rallies). The report highlights the methods, types and locations of demonstrations in number, and the way the security forces dealt with the protests of citizens and the number of dead, injured and arrested in all cities of the Kurdistan Region.
2. Metro’ reports on the Situation of Press Freedom in Kurdistan region have been the source of dozens of masters and doctoral theses inside and outside the Kurdistan Region, as well as a reliable source of international reports on press freedom, human rights organizations, UNAMI, UN special decision-makers, the foreign ministries of several countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France and the Netherlands. Despite its domestic importance by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and parliament.
Over the past 15 years, some officials of the ruling parties, instead of thinking about improving the environment for press freedom, have resorted to creating organizations dependent on their funding and exposure in order to disrupt public opinion about the situation of press freedom. But because the reality does not lie, these organizations are the result of the two-administration culture of the civil war, which soon lost its influence and some of them are mentioned in press conferences as jokes of the day.
Metro Center has put forward more than 20 recommendations to the future Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to improve the environment for freedom of expression, including respecting pluralism, genuine pluralism, not creating media and organizations, producing false pluralism.
