June 2025's Protest Report summary



In June 2025, citizens organized 32 protests, demonstrations, boycotts and rallies in the Kurdistan Region.

• (18) activities in Sulaimani, (8) activities in Erbil, (1) activity in Halabja, (1) activity in Raperin and (4) activities in Garmian.

• (16) activities for salaries, (9) activities for employment demands, (3) activities for services, (1) activities for condemning the war, (3) activities for various demands.

• 81 teachers, activists, political cadres and journalists were arrested and released during the activities in Sulaimani. Also, one kidnapping was recorded which was by masked forces in Duhok, where the victim was released after being tortured.

• Some detainees in Sulaimani, endured violence by security forces during their arrest, there were signs of beatings on their bodies.

• Two cases of regret were recorded in Duhok, both citizens made critical statements, followed by statements of regret.

• June was the worst month for freedom of expression due to campaigns of obstruction and arrests.

• For the first time, the Kurdistan Region’s Security Agency apologized to the detainees in Sulaimani.

• June was a bad month for the Parliamentary immunity of parliamentarians. Sipan Amedi, a member of the Kurdistan Parliament from the Naway Nwe faction, was kidnapped in Duhok. Ali Hama Salih, leader of the Halwest faction in the Kurdistan Parliament, was arrested in Sulaimani.
