2025: The emergence of cyber-attacks on some pages of media outlets is an
attempt to silence opponents and holders of different political opinions, it’s against
political conflict and pluralism, and Metro Center condemns it.
During the political
conflict and elections, some media outlets are subjected to cyber-attacks and
their pages are burned by Meta. These attempts are against healthy political
conflict.
Despite being ranked
among the worst countries in terms of Internet freedom, Iraq has deliberately
cut off the Internet, blocked social media platforms and messaging programs,
censored media content and cyber-attacks on the pages of activists and
journalists.
Latif Nerwayi, a
member of the leadership and head of the media board of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan,
told Metro Center that since the beginning of the election campaign, digital
attacks have been launched on several media institutions in Sulaimani, web TV,
sites, social networking pages of both personal and well-known media owned by
prominent personalities. "These attacks are against freedom of expression,
the press and pluralism," he said. "These attacks are in the name of
protecting national security and other things that have no basis."
Also today, the media
agency Politic Press issued a statement in which it directly accused the
Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP). "They have made themselves the owners of
Political Press products that are not true and were recorded by their
institution's cameras and then reported these products with the aim of closing
and burning our Facebook sites.”
Through its partners
in international organizations, Metro Center investigates this issue and its
sources and causes.
