A Rudaw documentary has been nominated for a Webby Award. This is the first time a production from the Kurdistan Region and Iraq has been nominated for the award and is competing with the best and most captivating documentaries.
"The Korowai: A window into the past” was nominated in the "Travel and Lifestyle” category and is up against documentaries from the United States, New Zealand and Georgia.
"For a Kurdish documentary to compete for this global award in New York is a win for every Kurd and every Kurdish and Iraqi journalist,” said Rudaw’s Roj Eli Zalla, producer and presenter of the documentary.
"Hundreds of thousands will see one of the most extraordinary works of the year, which focused on capturing the nuances of the story of the korowai tribe," he added.
The documentary, which was released in October, was shot on the island of Papua in Indonesia and tells the story of the Korowai tribe living in the forest who were not discovered until the 1970s. They did not know of the existence of an outside world, and neither did the world know of their existence.
The Korowai are one of the 312 tribes inhabiting the rainforest that covers vast swathes of the Indonesian Papua region. They are one of the last remaining cannibalistic tribes in the world.
The Webby Awards, established in 1996, are global excellence awards presented annually by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS). Described as the Oscars of the internet, the awards focus on innovation and technical skills on various online platforms.
Nominees are selected by IADAS and then the winners are determined by a number of international judges. The winner will also be determined in part by public vote.
Previous winners include Google, NASA, the New York Times, BBC, Apple, Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, TikTok, and several other global technology and internet giants.
